Water solution a slingshot

Dean Kamen has been working on this problem for a while. I want his solution to work. I want to be able to say that a single dishwasher size unit can be made cheaply to purify water. If he adds in chlorination so that it stays clean, even better.
But right now, getting the cost down is the challenge.
vapor compression distiller
evaporate the water (boil) and then distill it.
Simple enough, and good enough to get pure water on the other end.
but how to do it cheaply enough so that enough volume gets through, and so that biologics don't recontaminate the water once purified.

We know that the world can't sustain 7B people. I doubt that it could even sustain 100M given our consumption. Case in point. We have over 300M people here in the States, and when something becomes a fad, entire species disappear. Fish sticks...atlantic cod; Sushi bars...yellowfin tuna. Crabcakes...chesapeake blue crab. I admire his humanity, but I may have a moral objection with handing out magic water machines to cultures with exponential growth strategies. When the Malthusian bubble pops, will magic food machines be available?
