The key element I saw in this article was generating power from waste heat.  Most of the fuel in a gas tank goes towards heat.  heating up the engine block, heating the air, and heating the brakes.

 

If we can recapture that power, it goes a long way toward energy efficiency, and a lower carbon footprint.

 

The challenges of capturing infrared radiation are stated in the article, it's not as easy, and even after the energy was captured it couldn't be used.

 

But the first part, capturing the energy was done.
