self driving cars again

Businessweek article on self driving cars.

I liked the fictional story, but if/when we have self driving cars, I do not believe that humans will be driving at that point. It might be like Minority Report, where being in control is a luxury, and most cars will be autonomous. There's no reason to be driving in a world of self controlled cars.

The safety factors are better suited for the vehicles, it will be people who will cause problems. The good news is, the passengers will be so distracted by LCD screens in the vehicle that no one will really want to drive.

The final paragraph stating that the elderly will want to purchase these automated vehicles, in order to maintain their independence, and have the ability to travel is correct. Having people who may not have the reaction times of a 30 yr old, out there on the road, because they are allowed can pose a hazard. Providing them with an automatic driver will be a lot safer.
